Block Printing

Block Printing

Block printing is an ancient Indian craft where a design is drawn on paper and then painstakingly transferred by hand carving it into a wooden block. Once the blocks have been made they are dipped in dye and then used to hand stamp repeat patterns onto fabric.

Each individual block takes several days to make and designs often use several different blocks.

Block printing today is focused around the Rajasthani city of Jaipur, in north west India. The craftsmen who make the blocks and do the printing are almost all born into the printing community and their families have been block printers for many generations.
